FALCHUK, K. H., AND R. W. BERLINER. Hydrostatic pressures in peritubular capillaries and tubules in the rat kidney. Am. J. Physiol. 220(5) : 1422-1426. 197 1 .-A servo pressure-measuring device was used to study the pressure relationships in the tubules and capillaries of the superficial renal cortex by micropuncture techniques. Mean pressure was 10.9 =t 0.5 mm Hg in proximal tubules, 6.5 rt 0.5 mm Hg in peritubular capillaries, 5.5 rfr 0.4 mm Hg in distal tubules, and 13.5 =t 0.8 mm Hg in star vessels. Following infusions of isotonic saline, mannitol, or albumin solutions, or partial constriction of the renal vein, or occlusion of both carotids, the pressures in both proximal tubules and peritubular capillaries increased. Following partial constriction of the aorta, the pressures decreased. The difference in pressure between capillaries and proximal tubules was present under all conditions. These data suggest that the relationship between pressures in the structures of the renal cortex and the interstitial space is complex. It is suggested that renal cortical interstitial pressure is lower than previously believed, and probably no higher than about 5 mm Hg.

A study in vivo of peritubular oncotic pressure and proximal tubular reabsorption in the rat.

1. Peritubular capillary microperfusion was used to examine the effects of protein-free and hyperoncotic homologous plasma on fluid reabsorption by proximal convoluted tubules in the hydropenic rat. 3H-labelled p-aminohippurate was added to perfusates for the purpose of estimating the extent to which tubules under study were bathed by the perfusates. [14C]Mannitol was added to perfusates in ord...

Impaired renal blood flow and cortical pressure autoregulation in contralateral kidneys of Goldblatt hypertensive rats.

Experiments were conducted on two-kidney, one clip renal vascular hypertensive rats to assess the ability of the kidney contralateral to renal vascular stenosis to autoregulate renal blood flow (RBF), glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and hydrostatic pressures in cortical structures during conditions of acutely reduced renal arterial blood pressure (BP). When observed at their respective, spont...

Hydrostatic pressure changes related to paracellular shunt ultrastructure in proximal tubule.

We examined the effets of changes in hydrostatic pressures on the ultrastructural geometry of the lateral intercellular space and tight junctions in proximal tubules of contrtol (C) and volume-expanded (VE) Necturus kidney. The following groups of tubules were studied: (1) C, free-flow pressure, (2) C, stopped-flow, high-luminal pressure, (3) C, stopped-flow, low-luminal pressure, (4) VE, free-...
